PISA-debate demands nuance, students must remain the core focus
Across Europe, the media are filled with reactions to the latest PISA results. In many countries, the debate has quickly turned to a single question: Are screens in schools to blame for falling scores? However, a broader look at data across the region reveals a far more complex reality.
Countries with predominantly analog classrooms, such as Germany and France, as well as digital frontrunners, are experiencing similar downward trends. This demonstrates that the challenges facing education might extend well beyond the walls of the classroom.
Jakob Skogholm, CEO
"When we analyze the PISA data across borders, it becomes clear that this decline impacts all of Europe. It reflects broader societal shifts, ranging from changing media habits at home to how rapid digital consumption affects young people's focus. If we reduce this complex reality to a simple debate about hardware in the classroom, we miss the opportunity to find real solutions and focus on the impact of learning."
Reversing this trend requires a balanced perspective where technology and pedagogy complement one another, rather than being framed as opposing forces.
Alexandra Blomberg, CCO:
"We shouldn't pit deep reading against digital literacy as students need both to thrive in today’s and tomorrow’s society. Physical books are irreplaceable for focus and deep comprehension, while digital tools provide accessibility and personalized support. The most important thing we can do is trust teachers and provide them with the full toolkit to meet every student's unique needs."
At ILT Education, we believe that technology should never replace pedagogy – it should empower it. By providing solutions that support both traditional deep reading and digital accessibility, our mission is to give teachers the flexibility they need to build inclusive learning environments. Ultimately, it’s not about the tool itself; it’s about ensuring that every student, regardless of their background or learning style, has the opportunity to build deep comprehension, a love for reading, and the skills needed for the future.
